What Kind of Products Are Made on a Machine Assembly Line?

An assembly line is a production process that breaks the manufacture of a good into steps that are completed in a pre-defined sequence. Assembly lines are the most commonly used method in mass products. They reduce labor costs because unskilled workers are trained to perform specific tasks.

For example, companies hire workers rather than hire a skilled craftsperson to put together an entire piece of furniture or vehicle engine, only to add a leg to a stool or a bolt to a machine.

Some of the products made in a machine assembly line include:


A car assembly line comprises multiple stations where machines perform various tasks in the assembling process. The car-in-production will then move down a motorized conveyor system to the next work station, where another job will be completed. The vehicle production line in many plants begins with the set-up, in which the car frame is mounted to the conveyor system.

The frame serves as the vehicle’s skeleton, and all other components will be attached to or supported by it. After the frame is attached to the line, various elements such as the engine, transmission, drive axles, and even the body can be connected at multiple points along the car production line.


The assembly of an aircraft entails combining numerous pieces or subassemblies until the complete aircraft is ready for operation. Rigging is also performed, aligning aircraft parts or sections to provide optimum flying characteristics.

A certain amount of rigging is required during aircraft assembly, although certain modifications must be done even after the final assembly. For example, the final assembly of entire aircraft typically necessitates a building outfitted with a network of overhead rails on which heavy-lift cranes travel.

Electronic Equipment

Electronic devices and gadgets are an essential part of modern life as they have a wide variety of applications. Computers, electric motors, remote controls, phones, and other control devices are examples of electronic products. The general procedures in the assembly line are gathering, soldering, or integrating electronic components and circuits to accomplish one or more unique functions.

In addition, it ensures the viability of a printed circuit board (PCB), which is key to all modern electronic gadgets and devices. A PCB is most easily identified as a unique green chip strewn with copper pieces and lines. In electronics assembly, most of the work is done by machines because the electronic parts are too small or fragile to be handled by human beings.


Engines are another product made in machine assembly lines.

Several machines are involved in the assembly line, the most common one being a CNC lathe machine. CNC Swiss Lathes are an excellent example of lathe machines. They are engineered to maximize accuracy and economy in the production machining of complex precision parts needed in the engine.

The assembly line for engines has four significant blocks essential to the engine. These blocks are as follows:

Short Block Assembly

A short block is a section of a cylinder block extending from below the head gasket to above the oil pan. Cam-in-block engines have a camshaft, balance shafts, timing gears, and cylinder blocks. The short block is assembled at this point from all of the constituent components and then sent on.

Piston Sub-Assembly

This block contains the individual parts needed to put together a piston. A piston comprises lands, heads, ring grooves, and skirts held together by a wrist or piston pin. Though the essential components remain the same, the pistons can alter the head form or ring positioning.

Cylinder Head Assembly

The cylinder head sits on top of the cylinder block and allows air and fuel to pass through to the cylinder. The cylinder head also houses valves, fuel injectors, and spark plugs in some situations. This station mounts all of these components before sending them to the next station.

Final Assembly

At this point, the engine is completely assembled. The parts assembled independently in the sub-assembly stations are installed onto the engine’s main body. If the finished product is part of the assembly line, it may be sent to the next station for testing.

Assembly lines play a crucial role in manufacturing facilities. Whether the production focus is automobiles or food, an assembly line can allow a facility to operate at a consistent, cost-effective pace.
